(3107) Franz Ferdinand / What Made Milwaukee Famous

Franz Ferdinand

From the ACL Taping Program on September 24, 2005:

As “the coolest thing to come from Scotland since Sean Connery”(People), Franz Ferdinand has taken the world by surprise since the release of their debut CD last year. Their new CD, You Could Have It So Much Better, won’t even be out until Oct. 4, but it is already being considered one of the top CDs of 2005.

With the release of their self-titled debut in April of 2004, Franz Ferdinand instantly became the stars of the new British indie-rock invasion. They earned three Grammy nominations, their song “Take Me Out” was voted 2004’s No. 1 song by the Village Voice and they were at the top of many best of lists.

Time magazine wrote “these musicians are out to move your feet, and their giddy soul is revealed in every trick they use to get the job done.”

After a year playing to millions of people and winning critical praise and music awards, the band headed to a home studio just south of Glasgow to record a follow-up. The CD’s debut single, “Do You Want To,” earned four stars from Rolling Stone, which said the song is “a fearless bubble gum mishmash of glam, disco and the Beatles. And it will be playing on repeat in your head for the next three months.”

What Made Milwaukee Famous

From the ACL Taping Program on September 24, 2005:

With their “elegant pop” (Billboard), intelligent humor and electronic-fused choruses, What Made Milwaukee Famous has “swiftly become one of Austin's best indie rock bands, deftly balancing melody with muscle” (Austin Chronicle).

The four-piece mixes distorted vocals, pop sensibilities and raucous rock to form a unique sound that, since their 2005 SXSW performance, has critics buzzing about them being the next big thing. Both Billboard and Rolling Stone list them as a new band to watch and Mundane Sounds wrote WMMF “sounds like everything you probably like and nothing you’ve ever heard.”

What Made Milwaukee Famous’ debut release, Trying to Never Catch Up, has received critical praise and has given the band an ever-increasing fanbase. Silent Uproar wrote that with Trying to Never Catch Up, “WMMF blends Death Cab for Cutie /John Vanderslice rock with the swagger of Austin counterparts Spoon. The result is a delightful and dynamic 11 track venture that is experimental and varied yet familiar and accessible. Genres merge from power-pop, to surf rock, to retro revival rock, but never settle on one long enough to pigeonhole the group.”
