Gnarls Barkley

From the ACL Taping Program on September 27, 2008:

After just a few years of working together Gnarls Barkley has already won multiple Grammy Awards, sold millions of CDs and gained a reputation for being focused on "unrestrained creativity and an enviable sense of musical freedom" (Mojo).

Both rapper/vocalist Cee-Lo Green and multi-instrumentalist and producer Danger Mouse have had impressive musical careers as solo artists before forming Gnarls Barkley. The duo met while on tour and began working on songs together. They collaborated on the songs "What You Sittin‚ On?" for Lex Records in 2004 and "Benzie Box" from the Dangerdoom album The Mouse and the Mask in 2005.

When they released their first CD, 2006's St. Elsewhere, the duo almost immediately jumped into the national spotlight with the international hit single "Crazy." The single made history by becoming the first song in the U.K. to reach No.1 based on downloads alone. St. Elsewhere established Gnarls Barkley as a place for Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse to experiment with music. "Both artists have stepped outside their regular roles to make what feels like a genuinely instinctive, love-fueled record that zings with an enthusiasm for all spectrums of music," wrote Dot Magazine. The Guardian wrote, "the mass of disparate sounds are perfectly bound together by some astonishing songwriting."

Earlier this year, Gnarls Barkley released their second CD, The Odd Couple, featuring "intriguing new sounds each time, from heavenly organs to cartoon noises" (Paste Magazine) for "a milestone in modern psychedelic soul" (Uncut). "These pop-art pranksters deliver," wrote the Onion AV Club. "The Odd Couple is the exhilarating sound of the band geeks and theater weirdoes taking over the school."

Thievery Corporation

From the ACL Taping Program on June 25, 2008:

With their first releases in the late ’90s, Thievery Corporation defined a new genre of electronic music. “Blending vocal theatrics, spiritual exploration and subtle songcraft” (Popmatters), Rob Garza and Eric Hilton have become the standard-bearers for creativity and innovation in electronica.

Thievery Corporation create a “deft merging of all things dub, electronica, and bossa nova, creating sweet and savory tracks” (Billboard). Borrowing from the sounds of their favorite Brazilian bossa nova, Jamaican dub reggae, vintage film soundtracks, and psychedelic rock to forge into new sonic territory. “Our deepest source of inspiration comes from our record collections,“ said Garza.

The duo caught the ears of underground DJ’s with their first two 12“offerings and their 1997 debut Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi. The highly acclaimed The Mirror Conspiracy, released in 2000, contained the seminal international hit “Lebanese Blonde.” 2005’s The Cosmic Game broke new ground for the band with high-profile collaborations with The Flaming Lips, Perry Farrell and David Byrne for a release that critics say is “so darkly delicious you have to admit it’s their masterwork (All Music Guide).”

With a long discography of independently distributed and self-produced CDs, including several remixes of classic songs, Thievery Corporation are among the most adventurous and compelling artists of the genre. Rolling Stone wrote “Together, Hilton and Garza explore foreign cultures with wide-eyed curiosity and a taste for the unexpected. Then they lock themselves in a studio and record songs that tell stories of a better world.“
