Madeleine Peyroux

Austin City Limits is proud to welcome modern chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux to studio 6A. Born in Athens, Georgia, Peyroux grew up in Brooklyn, Southern California and, most significantly, Paris. As a teenager, she toured Europe with a French street ensemble, singing jazz standards and developing her style. Signing to Atlantic Records, Peyroux released Dreamland in 1996, featuring both originals and tunes from the catalogues of Bessie Smith, Edith Piaf, Patsy Cline and Billie Holiday, to whom she’s often compared. After a few years back busking in Paris, with the occasional Stateside club date, Peyroux returned in 2004, signed to Rounder Records and working with former Joni Mitchell producer/sideman Larry Klein to establish her distinctive mixture of vocal jazz and adult alternative pop. The albums Careless Love (2004) and Half the Perfect World (2006) contained covers of Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Elliott Smith and Leonard Cohen, a key influence. She comes to Austin in support of Bare Bones, her first album to consist solely of original songs.
