Okkervil River
We’re always pleased at Austin City Limits to showcase rising stars from our hometown. In that capacity we present Okkervil River. Led by New Hampshire émigré Will Sheff, the band has taken its folky indie rock to stages all over the world and released a series of acclaimed albums.
After moving to Austin a decade ago, Sheff formed Okkervil River, which played its first gig in 1999 and self-released an EP and its debut Stars Too Small to See in 2000. Later that year, the band began working with former Glass Eye member and Austin scene fixture Brian Beattie as producer, commencing work on Don’t Fall In Love With Everyone You See, releasing it nationally on the Jagjaguwar label in 2002. The group has regularly toured and made records ever since, including the breakthrough Black Sheep Boy, which was named one of 2005’s top albums by Amazon.com, and the interrelated LPs The Stage Names and The Stand Ins. Now, following high profile appearances on The Late Show With David Letterman and Late Show with Conan O’Brien and a stint as Roky Erickson’s backing band, Okkervil River makes its Austin City Limits debut.
